The Studio.

Who is behind the studio?

My name is Véronique Yan

What is your background?

Passionate about drawing and creation in all its forms since early childhood, I understood early on what my path was and always gave myself the objective of realizing myself in a creative profession where drawing would be the basis. I started my studies with fashion design, then my curiosity led me to study Fine Arts. Being passionate about animated films, I then chose to specialize in 3D/animated film studies. My path, nourished by these diverse and complementary experiences, enriched me both culturally and technically. I finally found, in my 3D studies, the idea of volume but also some notions I had learned in sewing when it came to dressing my characters. I started to work as a graphic designer in an agency, then as a stylist designer, and it is during this last experience that I developed this taste for the creation of patterns, to be able to adapt them to all types of supports and to bring by that color and joy in everything!

Describe your style :

Curious by nature, I like to work on different projects, in order to renew myself, to discover, to progress... I like to adapt to different styles and challenges when working with my clients.

What are your main inspirations / influences ?

I am a great admirer of William Morris' creations. I also love the work of Gustav Klimt and, nowadays, the designer Justina Blakeney. I am also very sensitive to Japanese art, more refined. My sources of inspiration are also found in object design, particularly architectural, with Zaha Hadid for example. In everyday life, I find them in the small details of everyday life, nature, an expression, an attitude, a colorful atmosphere…

Which place inspires you the most?

One of my favorite places that I find very inspiring is Collioure. The colors there are brilliant! It is a sublime place and this by all the times. This place is known among other things for having inspired many artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Derain...

Your first print memories :

I was 3 years old, the vintage wallpaper in my parents' kitchen. Describe your creation process. When I have carte blanche, I create according to the inspiration of the day, images come to my mind and according to what I imagine, I define if I have to work first with the traditional mediums, which I scan and then rework on my software according to the desired result, or if I draw directly on a graphic tablet.

What is your favorite medium to work with and why?

I started, like everyone else, to draw by hand, and I must admit that the contact with pencils, paint, pastels,... but also clay (another of my passions) gives a unique sensation. That said, the computer tool is different but just as fabulous because of all its possibilities! And of course, mixing the different mediums gives a great satisfaction and allows to reach technically the desired result, directly exploitable for the customer.

While working, what do you listen?

While working I listen to a very eclectic rock radio, but I can also listen, depending on the mood, to lyrical, blues and metal! :)

What is your job's favorite part ?

All the steps are interesting, from the iconographic research to the writing of the technical file, however it is obviously the pure creation part that I prefer and the work on the all over which the result is always an exciting moment!

What type of product / sector do you mainly work for ?

For now, I'm touching all the sectors. I will see in time if some of them stand out.

On which fairs do you exhibit?

I haven't had the opportunity to participate in a trade show yet, but it is part of my plans!

What advice would you like to give to new designers who are just starting out?

I would tell them to remain curious about everything, to try to multiply experiences, and especially to always continue to learn and train because techniques evolve very quickly.
