Laura Bernard Gryspeert
Tell us about your background
After a childhood spent in Italy, I trained at Ensaama in Paris in Interior Architecture and then specialized in Textile and Material Design
at the Ecole Supérieure Nationale des Arts Décoratifs. For the past 20 years, I have collaborated with several fabric editors and interior design agencies as a decorator.
Now I have created my own design studio dedicated to the field of decoration and above all to fashion, a universe particularly dear to me.
Describe your style.
I didn't necessarily want to be tied to a particular one, because I wanted to be able to offer a wide range of patterns according to my influences or in line with the identity of the brand I am collaborating with.
But more and more I find myself increasingly revisiting vintage combined with the colors of the moment or abstract-experimental ones.
What are your main inspirations / influences ?
It really depends on what's around me, what I've seen recently. It could be the cubist style or a garden I visit.
Which place inspires you the most?
There are a few. At the moment I have found inspiration while sitting for hours in Paris libraries and visiting museums and in particular the courtyard of the Petit Palais; the city of Seville, the gardens of Florence, the beach, the countryside and pictures of Australian aboriginal villages that really awaken my imagination!
What sets off your passion for prints?
Thanks to my professional experience, I have had the opportunity to see and hold sumptuous fabrics of big furniture textile company.
Your first print memories.
When we arrived in France, I was 5 years old. My parents bought a magnificent sofa and armchair with a Paisley style! Beautiful brown and orange patterns, very cashmere, I loved it!
I Also recall the little Pierrots of my aunt's wallpaper … when I was 8 years old. At that point, I already knew what I did and didn't like in terms of patterns.
Describe your creative process.
I think about a universe that I want to draw by hand, I concentrate very hard.... and I don't know why, but I draw little beetles instead of the initial geometric universe I studied! I let myself wander, photograph a detail, visit, collect, linger on a texture ... Experimenting with different mediums, going back and forth between pencils, brushes and graphic design to make each pattern unique.
What is your favorite medium to work with and why?
Gouache at the moment, I'm trying to make flat areas with my own coloristic research.
What music do you listen to while working?
I listen to classical music, or radio that starts with F and ends with P.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Designing my own collection of high-end cushions, with a study of fashionable weaves for decoration. Because I also weave ....
What do you want to accomplish in the future?
Designing my own collection of high-end cushions, with a study of fashionable weaves for decoration. Because I also weave ....
What advice would you give to new designers who are starting out?
To have fun, not to put any limits on yourself, to imagine, invent, dream. That's the best part of this job.
