The Studio.
Who is behind the studio?
Sandrine Djellil
What is your background?
Passionate about graphic arts and fashion, I naturally decided to study art, so I attended a school textile design at the Martinière Diderot in Lyon, and a professional training in computer graphics. I then worked as a textile graphic designer and stylist for more than 10 years in the ready-to-wear/fashion industry, which gave me the opportunity to work on all aspects of textile graphic design: screen printing, embroidery, patterns, prints, labelling and product development. I complete my background by a digital training in order to broaden my skills and decided to start a freelance studio.
Describe your style.
My style is very feminine, poetic, colorful and playful.
What are your main inspirations / influences ?
My inspirations are very varied: nature, fashion, art, retro, street art, vintage and trends...
Which place inspires you the most?
Several places: The seaside, the gardens, the landscapes, the trips, the exhibitions according to the mood of the moment
What sets off your passion for prints?
I have always drawn when i was a child, including on walls. I have always collected post cards, flyers, stationery, and a lot of goodies since I was very young.
Your first print memories.
The retro polka dots and floral patterns on the dresses that belonged to my mother and that I still keep preciously.
Describe your creation process.
Generally I start with research: inspirations, trends on one or more themes, I often create moodboards with colors and inspiring images.
Then comes the research of pattern or graphic elements that I will realize with pencil, or fine felt pen that I will digitize, I also often work with the graphic tablet.
I then compose with the graphic elements in repetition to create a harmonious pattern. The colorations come to finalize the whole as a cherry on the cake. I work a lot on commission, the patterns must be easily modifiable in the composition and color
What is your favorite medium to work with and why?
The pencil and his effects because I like the textures it brings, the fine felt pen for the precision, it's more easier to be scanned and vectorized, I like the posca as well.
I use a lot of digital and vector illustration for the repeat of the patterns because I like the multitude of possibilities it offers.
However, I would like to return to more raw mediums such as gouache or chalk to intensify some effects and give another dimension to illustrations and prints. I would also like to use the iPad for his efficient and nomad side.
While working, what do you listen?
My Spotify playlists, quite eclectic.
What is your job's favorite part ?
The creative part, drawing and researching, looking for inspiration.
Having the opportunity to decline the patterns on different supports.
What type of product / sector do you mainly work for ?
I'm working for fashion (woman-child ready-to-wear), decoration and stationery, and packaging. I work a lot on commissioned patterns, illustrations and designs.
In parallel, I am developing new designs that I propose online for licensing.
On which fairs do you exhibit?
It will be my first time to exhibit in a show in July 2021 at Playtime, I am very happy to participate.
What do you want to accomplish in the future?
Growing the creative studio, and continuing to work on different types of projects. Also participating in a few textile design show like playtime or première vision, would be a really nice step to take.
I would also like to go deeper and further into the world of children, which I particularly like.
The biggest challenge you had to handle as a designer?
A beautiful project in collaboration with a communication agency and Baileys France:
to create a floral design directly on the bottle, with a staging and video of the creative process for the brand's digital communication.
What advice would you like to give to new designers who are just starting out?
To never give up, to follow your instinct by creating your own universe and to use social networks and internet for your communication.
