The Studio.
Who is behind the studio?
WXY Visual Design is a collaboration between two friends who met as
teenagers in the Montmartre district of Paris, France. Olivier Wijnen
and Géraud Yerlès, graphic designer and photographer.
What is your background?
For years we have collaborated on art exhibitions, creating images for
brands and repetitive patterns for surface design.
We have worked with companies and designers such as Barrie (Chanel
group), Jean-Paul Journe, Stéphane Plassier or Vanessa Bruno.
Describe your style.
After photographing the graffiti, we transfer the selected photos into
our in-house application: Pattern Builder, developed to reproduce the
photos in a repetitive kaleidoscopic pattern. The end result makes each
graffiti look very different from its original design. Sometimes it's
the most unexpected graffiti that produces the most beautiful patterns.
It's totally addictive!
What are your main inspirations / influences ?
The work of M.C. Escher and the work of Roger Penrose on paving.
The Iberian Azulejos and the North African Zelliges.
Which place inspires you the most?
Cities in general and the suburbs in particular, the life painted on the
decrepit walls.
What sets off your passion for prints?
Going through more than 30,000 photos to make a book in tribute to a
deceased photographer friend, of more than 365 shots.
Describe your creation process.
To create our designs, we photograph our travels and graffitis in
different cities famous for their graffiti neighborhoods - Paris,
Berlin, Lisbon, New York and Los Angeles are some of our favorite
places.
What is your favorite medium to work with and why?
Photography to be able to see the result immediately, thanks to our
in-house application: Pattern Builder.
While working, what do you listen?
Fip radio !
What is your job's favorite part ?
Visiting new places, and discovering graffiti, materials to photograph.
What type of product / sector do you mainly work for ?
We have worked for Barrie (Chanel group) and we develop products in our
own name online, for ready-to-wear or furniture...
What do you want to accomplish in the future?
We would like to develop a range of textile products based on our
digital designs.
The biggest challenge you had to handle as a designer?
The realization of plans and 3D views of more than 40 corners and
boutiques around the world in collaboration with the interior designer
D.Exbrayat for Vanessa Bruno.
