The Studio

Who is behind the studio?

Lucie Mouton

What is your background?

I have a degree in fashion design, which I spent in Lyon at Condé School.

Right after my degree, I did two internships: the first, somewhat by chance, was with Robert Vernet, it was with them that I discovered the profession of textile designer. It was a real crush, the idea of wanting to make it my job never left me. I then worked as a style assistant for a ready-to-wear brand. I also trained in haute-couture embroidery and worked in an embroidery workshop in Lyon.

Finally, after a few years of salaried employment, I finally dared to start my own business as a textile designer in 2017?

Describe your style.

Tough question. I would say it's graphic and colorful. I really like drawing intricate patterns with a lot of details.

What are your main inspirations / influences ?

The classic natural, plant and animal combo! This is what I prefer to represent in my work. The color associations speak to me a lot too. The universe of comics which I adore also influences me in my style.

Your first print memories.

The wallpaper in my bedroom when I was very young. There were some cats on it, I couldn't get enough of looking at it!

Describe your creation process.

It depends : when I already have an idea in mind, I will first look for a range of colors that speaks to me and I start drawing in Photoshop or Illustrator.

When I don't have any inspiration, I'll look at my books, go to Pinterest or Instagram until I spot a detail, colors, a theme that will give me one or more drawing ideas.

What is your favorite medium to work with and why?

I work my designs almost exclusively digitally. I like this freedom and speed that my graphics tablet gives me, being able to cancel a line, change colors easily, test a lot of things while being efficient.

I keep the traditional techniques that I also like a lot for other things !

What is your job's favorite part ?

The creation part. When I sit down to start my new collection, when I go in search of inspiration and I spend days drawing for myself.

What type of product / sector do you mainly work for ?

For clothing: women and children, and stationery.

On which fairs do you exhibit?

Première Vision, and since the launch of the independent shows, Print Days and Bonnes Mines.

Your best fairs memories.

The first sale of course! But also the meeting with many other designers that I followed for so long on the networks. The atmosphere at the show is really unique and I really like the mutual help and kindness that we find there.

The biggest challenge you had to handle as a designer?

To be able to live of my job !

What advice would you like to give to new designers who are just starting out?

Perseverance. The beginning may seem long, but you shouldn't let it go. For me, it was the Première Vision show that really kick-started my career.
